DFW Blogger Meetup - June 2011

This past Saturday, the DFW bloggers met at Charming Charlie, a fashion accessories boutique, for some well-needed shopping and girl time. The event was put together by Julie of Rosy + Tart.

This was my first time at Charming Charlie, and when I entered the door, it was like whoa! Endless amounts of jewelry and other accessories. Now, I'm the kind of girl that likes structure and organization when shopping...same style organized by size per rack...so this took me by surprise. My strategy...divide and conquer! Luckily for me, everything had a common theme and was organized by colour. Within each section, there were probably hundreds of items to discover, so I did an initial run through of the store then went through again in sections, bit by bit trying not to get overwhelmed. There were several items that tickled my fancy, but in the end, I got these two necklaces with matching earrings.

Here are some random items that I came across...

After shopping, we walked across to Brick House Tavern & Tap for lunch. At this point, we were all pretty much starving, so it was unanimous that the mandatory outfit photo shoot would have to wait until after lunch. I had the crab cake sandwich with cajun fries and a glass of water...the water cancelled out the calories of the sandwich and fries...right??? We chatted and laughed and enjoyed the rest of the time. This crab cake was so good....

Have you ever had something in your wardrobe for over a year that you never wear? Well, I have tons of them, and this dress and bag are part of the group. You'd think that an all black maxi dress in this summer heat would be torture, but it was the opposite. The bottom half of the dress was linen, so it allowed for a lot of flowing air. Bold, colourful jewelry and some comfy wedges topped off my outfit. It was an afternoon well spent. Hope everyone had a good weekend :)

It Was An Accident!

Today’s outfit was a complete accident. I’m a person that loathes getting up early in the morning. If I can sleep in late, I’ll take it! So getting up for work is always a struggle. In order to make it out the apartment on time, I have to get everything prepared the night before. This includes picking out my outfit. If I don’t, then it’s always a mad dash in the morning to get everything together and make it to work looking halfway decent. I was under the weather last night, so I went to bed early without even getting anything prepared. So this morning when I woke up, I was in panic mode as nothing was ready. I pulled out my always reliable pair of work-jeans and this sleeveless top that I’ve been meaning to wear (I got it for $7 at Target...woohoo!). My work environment is very casual and relaxed, so jeans are acceptable. This deep blue cardigan was the first one in sight, so I went for it. To my surprise, the blue worked well with the red-orange-ish checkered wrap top. I love wearing colours, and I love mixing them, but I was surprised that this combination worked well. Not bad for a last-minute/grab-what-is-in-sight outfit.

Styling tip: If you work in a casual environment like I do where jeans are acceptable, be careful not to make it too casual, because after all, we are still in an office environment. Try to keep it to straight or wide leg jeans. Flares are also acceptable. Bootcut…hmmm…I’ll say yes. Skinny jeans…acceptable…but only if it’s not too tight and done right. Always try to go for darker wash denim. They are dressier and more polished than lighter washes. Also, pair the jeans with a dressier top and heels to make it more classy looking. Remember, jeans to work should never be too tight and only be worn on casual days or if your office is an overall casual environment. If your office has a strict dress code, then I would suggest sticking to only straight and wide legs. Hope everyone is having a great week!

Running Errands...

Today was a hot day, and I had a lot of errands to run. If you live in or have ever been to Texas, you know how hot and miserable it can get. It was supposed to get up to 100 degrees today, and the sad thing is that it will only get hotter as summer moves along. So, what do I do at this time of the year? I wear less clothes! Seriously, this heat is not conducive to jeans or anything that covers a good portion of the body, and since I had a lot of running around to do, I needed something easy and comfortable. So when summer rolls around, I like to have lots of shorts, skirts, and dresses in stock. For today's outfit, I turned to a pair of shorts that I recently bought. It's linen, so it was lightweight and perfect for the hot day. It's times like these that I wish I was at the beach....

Styling tip: When buying shorts, try not to go for super short shorts. Keep it age appropriate; we're not teenagers anymore. Also, have some fun with it and try some colours. Plain denim shorts are versatile, but also safe. Step out of the box and get coloured shorts, or patterned shorts like I'm wearing today. Another great option is bermuda shorts. They are completely age appropriate, and the best part is that you can dress them up and dress them down.
