Monthly Bloopers - October and November 2011

I've been thinking about this idea for a few months now, and I finally decided to execute. I'm introducing a new series, "Monthly Bloopers." The pictures that you see on the blog are the few that turn out to be viewer-friendly from the many, many pictures that I may take in a given day. When I first started the blog, I thought that taking the pictures would be the easiest part, but turns out it isn't. At least for me lol.

Those who know me personally know that I have a silly and sometimes sarcastic side that you only get to see once I'm comfortable with you. (I'm not as quiet as I may seem...*wink wink*). I always have fun when taking my pictures, and sometimes the results are quite amusing. So now I'm sharing some of these "unflattering" pictures with you.

Here are the October and November bloopers.....

Fire and Ice: My friend thought it would be funny to take a pic while I fixed my clothes.

Confused: This was my first attempt at using a tripod and the self timer. Didn't get the lighting  right :(

Happy Independence, Antigua and Barbuda!: Fixing my hair

What to Do?: Note to self, DO NOT jump off of a raised surface in heels! My knee hurt after this :(

"Neutral" Dilemma: Spirit fingers!!! Actually, I was cold and didn't know what else to do!

TGIF!: I was a bit unmotivated this day, so this is me pumping myself up :)

Hope you enjoyed!

TGIF!

I'm so glad it's Friday. Time for the weekend. Woohoo! I'm even more excited that next weekend will be a long one with all the Thanksgiving celebrations. We had a company-wide Thanksgiving potluck lunch today at work, and let me tell you, I have never seen so much food at work before lol.

The past few days have been a little chilly, but not as chilly as it should be for November though. So, I've had several perfect opportunities to sport some scarves. Scarves are my favorite accessory for the fall and winter. Along with being super fashionable, they keep you so warm and cozy, and they can dress up the simplest outfit. Take today's look for example. Faded ripped jeans, grey sweater, and boots. Add a bright scarf and my favorite leopard handbag to that, and it added so much life to what could have been a rather dull outfit. You just can't help but to love scarves!

What are everyone's plans for Thanksgiving? Anyone heading out early for some Black Friday shopping?

"Neutral" Dilemma

Of all the neutrals, black is probably my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, I love black, but sometimes it can look really harsh when accessorizing. Take today's outfit for example. As a result of not planning and preparing my work clothes the night before, I had to just go with the flow this morning. I also woke up late, so I didn't have much time to be creative. I was juggling this outfit in my head earlier this week, but never really tested it before executing. There was no time for trial and error, so I got up, got dressed, and headed out the door. (I showered and what not of course! lol) The main purpose of the colors that I chose was to complement my black and white print jacket. As I mentioned before, I love pieces in a black and white print. Even though it's an overly popular combination, my favorite color to pop it with is red, but every now and then, I use a different color. Today, I used my plum skirt. Unfortunately, to me, the black opaque tights plus the black top plus the black shoes were just a lot of BLACK. So, at the last minute, I threw on this scarf to lighten things up. Not quite what I had in mind, but it worked!

Word of the Day: Scalloped

I came across this picture on Refinery29's website of Rihanna wearing these scalloped tights. I like the "scalloped" style in general, but I don't think I would be comfortable pulling it off in a pair of tights like Rihanna did. It's cute though. What do you think?

Apart from food, "scallop" refers to a great style trend. We know scallop mainly as the marine organism in a shell much like oysters, clams, and mussels, but it is that same shell that is used as inspiration to pattern the scalloped edges and ridges of clothing.

Here are a couple cute looks I found while browsing around.

What do you think about the scalloped trend? Better yet, what do you think about Rihanna's tights, yay or nay?

What To Do?

What do you do when your outfit seems monochromatic in color? You add a colored belt to jazz it up!

Happy Independence, Antigua and Barbuda!

Today marks 30 years of independence for my country, Antigua and Barbuda, after breaking away from Britain in 1981. Every year around this time, the entire country engages in celebrations throughout the islands consisting of competitions, parades, expos, and food fairs. The National Dress (shown below) is worn by many on this day in its original form and in different variations. The dress is one of the national symbols and was designed by local artist and designer, Heather Doram. It consists of a madras dress with a white apron over it, and it is worn with pride by all. Unfortunately, I wasn't home to join in on the festivities, but I celebrated today in my own little way.

My outfit, like many, was inspired by the National Dress. The handbag and flower pin were made locally in Antigua out of the madras cloth, and I chose to accentuate the orange and red aspects. I wore a mustard skirt and accessorized with the red shoes that I bought, here. It's times like these that I get homesick and miss my family, but I plan on travelling home sometime next year. For my non-Caribbean readers, don't worry. I will definitely share with everyone what island life is all about ;) In the mean time, visit The Gem of the Caribbean on this blog to learn more about my home.
